In 1986, Canada stopped printing one dollar bills in favor of one dollar coins. Usually, forcing the public to switch to the coins is the main reason given for why the one dollar coin was so popular in Canada. Unfortunately, no such forced change happened in the United States, and that's usually the reason given for why one dollar coins aren't as popular. (Indirectly, that's why dollar bills are more popular) Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_dollar
Actually, how a vending machine detects that a bill is a real bill as opposed to a counterfeit bill is a closely guarded secret. According to an official at the Federal Reserve in Washington, DC, vending machines can have up to 30 different kinds of sensors to detect legitimate bills. What I meant by my answer was that the method by which the machines know what bill is what (whether it be a US 5 dollar bill, a Canadian 20 dollar bill, or a counterfiet bill) is very closely guarded by the makers of the machines. If it was known how the sensors differentiated bills from one another, it wouldn't be hard to make a counterfiet bill that would work.

Definition 1 means that, in the mideval ages, alchemists were looking for ways to turn metals (especially lead) to gold, the ultimate cure-all, (that's what panacea means) or a way to live forever.
