You got Mandarin right, but it's spelled Cantonese. Mandarin is the most widely spoken set of Chinese languages, followed by the Cantonese set of Chinese languages. Both of these have standardized forms, but there are also hundreds of different spoken forms for each one. Mandarin is spoken in most of China and Taiwan, where Cantonese is more restricted to the southern provinces in China and small Chinese communities spread around the world. Another major difference between the two are the number of tones each language uses to convey meaning. English has the same meaning, regardless of tone, so we have 0 tones in the language. Mandarin uses 4, while Cantonese can use up to 9. However, both use the same written language (as almost all Chinese languages do), so you can communicate between the two by writing. why do people keep copying your topic layout?
where did they get the idea for american idol?
where did reality tv come from?
once people get a certain version of the cold, they will be immune to it, i think, does that mean eventualy everyone will be immune to all of the colds?
are there real life holograms yet or are they impossible?

What REALLY are sea monkeys? I know they are some powder thing that you could put in water and "magically comes to life".. But what are they really?

Is it possible to find out the chemical formula of pure oak wood? If so, what is it?

Apparently, Ayana stole the cookies from the cookie jar.

Pez tells me that people steal my topic layout so they can get humorous responses to non-sensical questions. I think he's right.

The idea for American Idol probably came from a network executive trying to come up with a new reality based show to get ratings. The singing part probably came from a music video he was watching at the time.

Reality TV came from the audiences' desire to see how people really act in situations and make fun of them.

You won't become immune to all cold viruses because there are an infinite variety. Even a subtle change in the molecular structure requires a new antibody.

Holograms exist in real life. However, they are much too expensive to be conventional at the moment, so they only exist in research labs.

I don't really make a practice of watching Japanese Anime, though there are a few American series I like.

I think reality TV sucks, but there is a certain addictive aspect to it.

Well, since we own a GameCube, and not an X-Box, I'm going to have to go with the GameCube.

Well, imaginary numbers don't exist, hence the name, imaginary. One way to think about it is to see every number as having two components: a real component, and an imaginary component. This is expressed as A+i*B, where A and B are real numbers. A real number simply has B=0, and an imaginary number as a non-zero imaginary component. Now, i is a constant, which equals (-1)^(1/2). Because these numbers aren't real, they have no basis in real life and aren't used in anything but theoretical calculations.

Catnip is actually a combination of various chemicals, one of which is Nepetalactone, a mild sedative that induces euphoria in cats. Taken by humans, it produces a calming effect, which explains catnip tea. The chemical structure is similar to other sedative herbs. http://www.thepetproject.com/askthepete ... #ATECatnip

Sea monkeys are actually just a different name for brine shrimp, whose eggs can stay dormant for years, which marketers take advantage of by packaging them into paper bags. All brine shrimp need to grow is water with enough nutrients, even tap water works.

All wood is made of many different chemicals. The main chemical, however, is cellulose, organized into blocks, which used to be cells. The various chemicals left behind by cellular degratdation give wood it's color and strength. Since oak is one of the stronger woods, that means that when the cells die out, they leave complex chemicals behind which add to the cellulose's strength.

Why is it that when I add ".exe" to the end of the name of a zip file and then check it with a virus scanner it recognises it as a virus infected file? (EX: Thisfile.zip.exe)

Why do electricians use j instead of i when working with power produced by capacitors/inductors ('imaginary' power) ?

Because double extensions were once the most popular way to trick users into downloading and running viruses. On most Windows computers, the option to view extensions that Windows recognizes is disabled, so an executable with a JPG icon named "cool.jpg.exe" just shows up as "cool.jpg". Since this is extremely dangerous, most virus scanners just regard all double extensions ending in ".exe" or ".vbs" as viruses.

One we get larger than 10^3, or smaller than 10^-3, prefixes for the metric system of measurement only exist at every multiple of 3. There once was a prefix for 10^4, called "myria", but this has been rendered obsolete. The current prefix system was proposed at a conference of measures chaired by France and agreed upon by all metric using countries, so it's not likely to change in the near future.

The letter "J" was probably used simply because all other letters which would have significance were already taken by the time "imaginary power" was found, or a latin word beginning with a "J" which might mean "imaginary power".

The process on setting up a tunnel is more detailed than I would like to go into here. I'll be writing a guide for it and putting it up on my webpage soon. When I do, I'll post the link to it on this thread.

.99999... does not equal 1 because there will always be a non-zero X such that 1 - X = .99999..., therefore 1 = X + .99999..., and since X is non-zero, X + .99999... does not equal .99999...

Actually it's because 'i' is already used for alternating current.
Or possibly because 'j' is what is used as a unit vector for the y direction in mathematics.
But I don't blame you for trying :)

I'd like to think of a question, but I can't think of one at the moment...

But .999999...\3 = .333333... and .333333...*3 = 1

So then .999999... = 1

or does that not work?
