i think Comcast is a bunch of hippocrits....why? because they run all these ads saying that sattelite loses it's signal during every single storm...and here I am, watching my digital cable's picture disrupt itself after every lightning bolt....it's getting annoying. *lightning* *little blocks appear all over the screen and don't go away until the next keyframe*....over and over and over...and it makes funny noises...these kinda high-pitched 5x louder than every things else blips...ouch

I agree, execpt its my computer that sucks in lightning storms, which has almost nothing to do with comcast, but i still hate em!

I live in Australia, where Comcast has little to no presence, and I don't know anything about them, and I hate them!

I agree.

Yeah....I have comcast and they piss me off. Like, when there's a problem with the internet the first thing they ask is if you have a router (which I do), and if you say yes they'll say that that's the problem becuase they don't like the fact that you are making use of their service for two computers for the price of one. Bastards.... Plus, the service isn't even that good.

technically, using a router is against their TOS, but if they went around cutting you off for it...they'd have no more customers...and just say no when they ask if you have a router, they really can't tell. what pisses me off is that when they have an outage they don't seem to know.

me: "my cable modem isn't working"
comcast: "do you have a router?"
me: "yup"
comcast: "well, since you have a router it must be that. go get it replaced"
me: "i think you might have a problem cuz my friend's modem is out too"
comcast: " nope, we have no reported outages"
me: "can i report one?"
comcast: "no. if we allowed our customers to do that, we might be giving people an accurate view of our service"
me: "...then whats the use of saying no *reported* outages if you can't report one?"
comcast: "that doesn't matter. unplug you router and try your modem again" *click*
me: *runs down to comcast office, convienently placed 4 blocks away" *smack whack wham*
modem: *randomly starts working a few hours later*

it's sad cuz a lotta the time they cen't even get that service that 4 blocks--and yes, there is a comcast building 4 blocks from my house..

haha

LMAO! Yeah, that's what I should have done....except my comcast building is at least 2 miles away, and I really don't feel like going that far.

By having a computer that shares the internet connection with other computers on the network, I can escape having a router on Comcast's network. However, I too have experienced the pain of Comcast's idiocy. One sunday, I decided to call in an order for cable internet. I was assured that it would be ready and working within 24 hours, and if it wasn't, to call back. Of course, there was no connection. I called back and was told that my account needed to be rebuilt. This process was repeated over the next two weeks, until I finally got a technician that said, because I did not previously have cable TV, I needed a technician to come out to inspect the lines. When the technician came out, he was required by company policy to cut off every end of every coaxial cable connecting my cable modem to the outside. When he finally tested all the internal wiring and evaluated it as being in optimal condition, he inspected the outside line. When he opened the outside cable box servicing my neighbor's house and mine, we discovered the culprit of my non-connectivity. My line had not been plugged in. I can say that Comcast has a good reason for replacing all the coaxial cable ends so that they can ensure that it's not the cable's problem, their major fault lies in not telling me about what needed to be done. They should have seen in my account that I did not have cable TV and therefore should of had my line plugged in. The technician was nice enough to tell his superiors that the problem was entirely Comcast's fault, and we were not charged for his visit, but the Comcast billing department decided to bill us for a whole month of unused cable internet connection, starting from the day I placed the call.

Sorry about the long post, but I decided that a topic dedicated to problems with Comcast deserves a well structured rant or two, including Beyonder's comment about the routers. It makes some sense for them to restrict router usage, mainly because they don't want you to run over your monthly alloted transfer. The same goes for the rule against hosting any kind of server. Comcast is just worried that you're going to get traffic that you didn't pay for. However, if you can manage to keep the monthly traffic low enough between all your computers that it satisfies Comcast's agreements, the existance of a router or a server shouldn't be a problem.

comcast's caps are by the second. no more than 1500kb downstream and 128kb upstream per second...since you are capped to this speed by your modem's config file, it is not possible to go above this. comcast, however likes to make it seem that 'bandwidth hogs' are to blame for all their problems. they shouldn't blame their bad service on users who use the amount of bandwidth they pay for, since in their TOS they say you get up to 1500/128, they should be able to support some people who do use this much bandwidth some of the time. they just have their average usage estimates off and can't or barely can support these speeds

uncappers, on the otherhand should be kicked off the service because they can get more than the 1500/128 which is a clear violation of the TOS, while technically according to comcast anyone with a router is violating this TOS, it is not causing a major slowdown in the network as do people who have uncapped their modems and have the power to use all of a nodes bandwidth for their pleasure. the people with routers are just using the same 1500/128 they are paying for, but dividing it amongst however many computers they have in their LAN. and the no VPN thing is just silly(comcast says no VPNs unless you pay $95 a month for Comcast Pro). comcast needs a new policy--supply all customers with up to 1500/128. comcast doesn't even have to pay for all the bandwidth, just what the people use. they should start supplying people with useful connections instead of placing so many restrictions on the service so that the service becomes rather silly

in conclusion, comcast says 1500/128 assymetric service, but if you try to use it for more than you would dial-up they get pissed. and by 1500/128 they mean 900/90. i'm glad see that they finally got the ultra-high ping issue worked out and my pings are back down to normal levels...

There's one term in the contract that you missed. There is a line that says that you aren't allowed to go over some amount of transfer per month. This is the major limiting factor in having a router, server, or VPN.

Yeah.....I think that pretty much sums it up Pezman... It doesn't matter WHY they suck nearly as much as the shear fact that they do.

*rubs eyes* there is no monthly bandwidth limit!!!....man, that TOS agreement is long, and invents fun new words like UNUNBUNDLED! it also says comcast can spy on you! and that they don't promise you any speeds, or even a connection....*sigh* they truly are sad...
