No, though I wish I did. Wikipedia has a weath of information, and the basis behind it is that anyone who wants to add information can. This, of course, leads to the addition of false information, but somehow the social dynamics of Wikipedia ensure that respected members who know what they're doing come back and fix it. I wish I was an expert in some field so that I could contribute, but I'm just a good researcher.

how fast is a 'New York second'?

I’m glad to see that you found the solution to your file sharing problem, and that I could help.

According to the Dictionary of American Regional English, a New York minute is the length of time between the changing of a traffic light to green and when the driver behind you starts honking at you, which is roughly a nanosecond. If sixty New York seconds make up a New York minute, that makes a New York second roughly a sixtieth of a nanosecond, or 16.6 picoseconds. Source: http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-new1.htm

The Lindbergh baby was the child of famous aviation hero Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow. The controversy surrounding the child started when someone broke into the Lindbergh house and kidnapped the baby. Eventually, a culprit, Bruno Hauptman, was tried and found guilty for kidnapping and murdering the child. Even though the crime happened in 1932, stories appear in tabloids somewhat frequently about the missing "baby" found, alive and well, though they almost always get the age wrong (the child would be 73 years old this year). The rate of growth for hair differs from person to person, with women having a slightly higher rate than men. The average seems to be about 0.5 mm/day, though one study quoted exactly 0.44 mm/day. Source: http://npntserver.mcg.edu/html/alopecia ... fHair.html

What exactly does this mean, and why is "read" in quotations?

In order to understand this error message, you need to know a little bit about how computer memory works. Memory in a computer is laid out as a very long one-dimensional array of bytes. The first byte is numbered 0, the second 1, third 2, etc... The low numbered bytes (different for each operating system) are special since that's where the operating system sits in memory. It just so happens that most memory, before it's used, contains the value 0, so if you use any of these upper memory locations as an address to other memory (a technique known as pointing) you can accidently try to read from or write into location 0.

In this case, StyleXPService tried to read from the address stored in byte 0x0040F03C, which happened to be 0, causing the program to crash. Attempting to write would have changed "read" to "writtten".

If you had 2 candles of the the same mass, but one shaped height-wise and the other width-wise, which would burn faster?

Posted: Thu Apr 21, 2005 9:34 pm
by chromus
The shorter one would burn through faster. The wick of of a candle burns avout the same rate, no matter how much wax is around it, so a shorter wick would burn out faster than a long wick.
