Well, there might have been other factors in why he rode a horse. He might have wanted to impress the princess in the first case, and in the second case he might have wanted to save his pride rather than go without a horse.

The Dwarven market.You can also find riding dogs on the Gnomish and Halfing markets as well.

Well, gnomes aren't much for riding things. Same with halflings, but a little less so. Both races tend to prefer walking where they need to go. But about the markets, I was wondering where you saw this, in the movie, or something like D&D?

Eh, just specutalting really. It's a commonality though that Dwarves dislike being too far off the ground, especially while talking about horse riding and boating trips. I just like the book a lot more I suppose, more true to abstract facts, common sense, and continuity regarding plot and events in my opinion.
