A distinction needs to be made between an FTP server and an FTP client. According to my FTP logs, TGB has an FTP server called PureFTPd, which you might be interested in running if you want others to be able to connect to you and if you're running Linux or Unix. The FTP client that both Pez and I use is called FileZilla, which is a free (as in no cost) and open source FTP client that runs on Windows.

As much as I don't mind using the command line FTP program that comes with Windows, it's a much more efficient use of my time to use a graphical interface that automates so many tasks for me, as well allowing me to drag and drop files.

Internet Explorer is fine if you don't need advanced features. I like being able to log in with the [email protected] names that we need at TGB, as well as being able to schedule multiple uploads and downloads at the same time.

I just treat it like it's a folder. So I can ctrl+click ma files then copy, then paste.

I'm so.. lazy...

I should get a program or something someday...

I forget being able to just type in a username and password into a login box for IE. I was used to the ftp://[email protected] login style. Other FTP programs, though, allow you to upload or download a file while still browe and edit files by using a seperate conncetion just to transfer files. That's one of the main reasons I use a seperate program.

The only thing I don't like doing with ftp is uploading heaps of files at the same time, and that's because it get annoying with the continuous prompts.

Then I found out you could turn them off.

I still use a graphical program (LeechFTP) if I'm doing something like updating most pages in my site, but if I'm only uploading one or two files, it's not worth it.
